1. Just because you have an interest in something doesn’t mean that you have to study that thing. I’ve always loved politics so when it was time to pick a program, I chose something related to political science. About an hour into the first class, I knew I was in the wrong place. Not because I didn’t like politics, I do. But simply because I wasn’t meant to study that.
2. You’re allowed to make mistakes. You’re allowed to fail an exam or a class. It’s really not the end of the world. Cry a little, eat some chocolate and move on. Make it your motivation to do better.
3. You’re also allowed to change your mind. You can pick a major or a program and decide that you don’t like it. You can quit that and study something else. Who knows, you might find your calling
4. Whatever decision you make, there’s always going to be someone out there who thinks you’re wrong. But who cares. Do what you want to do. When I decided to study classical studies and anthropology, a lot of my friends thought I was being stupid, but believe me, it was the best decision I’ve ever made and no one can tell me otherwise.
5. College might not be for you and that’s okay. Everyone has a different kind of intelligence and your type of intelligence might not fit into the college mould. And that’s totally fine. It doesn’t mean that you aren’t smart. Having a college degree doesn’t make you smart, just like not having one doesn’t make you stupid.
